Teddy Sheringham is a familiar name to Red Devils fans. The player played for Manchester United for about four years. Sherringham was a first class forward. Together with his football club he won the Champions League trophy in 1999. At the time, the athlete was at the height of his fame. Suddenly, the MJ striker decided to retire from football. It came as a real shock to his fans.
They were astonished to learn that their idol turned to the game of poker. Sheringham had made it to the top. In fact, Teddy had been a gambling enthusiast since his youth. Growing up, Sheringham realized he wanted to link his career with gambling.
At the age of 39, the footballer attended his first poker tournament. The sportsman became seriously interested in this popular game. A few years later he unexpectedly retired from the sport. Sheringham began to visit casinos and play poker on a daily basis. He had fabulous luck at cards. The former MJ striker was beating all his opponents. Teddy Sheringham became a professional poker player.
One day he was contacted by a representative of poker room PokerStars and made him a very tempting offer. Thus, Sheringham was offered to sign an advertising contract. The sportsman could not refuse. After all, he was promised a hefty fee.
In the early noughties Teddy Sheringham took part in a poker tournament. He competed for the top prize of $7,000. The footballer then participated in a poker tourney. This time, Sheringham won 20,000 conventional units.
In 2009, a significant event happened in his life. He managed to be among the winners of the No Limit Hold’em tournament. As a result, Teddy became $67,000 richer. His total winnings for the year amounted to 85,000 conventional units.
Sheringham did not stop there. He constantly took part in poker tournaments and honed his skills as a player. Fortune smiled on him again in 2010. So much so, Teddy raked in a sizeable bankroll of 280,000 conventional units.
In the summer of that year Sheringham headed to Portugal. There he took part in another tournament. His rivals were well-known poker players. Among them: Martin Jacobsen, Toby Lewis, Sam Trickett. Teddy Sheringham couldn’t beat these poker stars. However, he did manage to finish in 5th place at the end of the tournament. His prize money totaled 118,000 AUD.
Sheringham was considered one of the best poker players in the world. Suddenly, this game of chance bored him. So, in 2012, Teddy stopped his participation in tournaments. The total amount that Sheringham was able to win at the poker table is 330,000 conventional units.
That same year, Teddy took up touring and started spending more time with his family. He explained to those around him that he needed a bit of a break before returning to big football.
In 2014, Sheringham became West Ham’s coach. He only lasted a year in that position. In 2015, Teddy started coaching Stevenage players. In 2016, his contract with that club ended.
In 2017, Sheringham was invited to take over as coach of Atletico India. However, he never turned out to be a good coach.
